Red Bull Honda’s Ashley Fiolek (pictured right) highlighted another Women’s Super X event at the Summer X Games, again taking gold and besting her foremost competitor, Jessica Patterson. Troy Lee Designs Honda rider Tarah Gieger grabbed the silver medal ahead of factory Kawasaki rider Sarah Price who rounded out the podium and nabbed her first X Games medal.
Price grabbed the holeshot on the downhill start, which ran down the stands and onto the stadium floor at the L.A. Coliseum. The WMX rookie rider held the lead for the first few turns before Fiolek relieved her of the position. Patterson was quick to move in on Price as well taking over second. From there, the stage was set for Fiolek and Patterson to do battle, continuing their rivalry from last year’s X Games event. Patterson pulled up on Fiolek and began trying some alternate lines to get around the factory Honda rider, but their battle was short-lived as Patterson went down hard on a large triple and was knocked out cold.
Patterson’s bad luck left Fiolek out front free and clear to take back-to-back X Games wins. Patterson came to on the Coliseum floor just in time to see Fiolek take the checkers and the gold, followed by Gieger and Price (pictured right taking the holeshot). Vicki Golden took fourth followed by Jacqueline Strong, Tatum Sik and Jolene Van Vugt.
Former X Games medalist Sherri Cruse followed in a dismal eighth place. The Suzuki rider was left to play catch up after hitting the ground on the first lap. Another former medalist, Elizabeth Bash, was relegated to a ninth place finish after she crashed on the same triple that claimed Patterson. Fortunately Bash was able to walk away from the crash.
