PHOENIX, ARIZ., JAN. 15 –

James Stewart cut the fastest lap in qualifying for tonight's round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. After finishing third at the opening round at Anaheim last weekend, the San Manuel Yamaha rider is out to prove a point tonight and topped both the first and second qualifying sessions with determined efforts.

Stewart's 48.421 in the second session was just over two tenths of a second faster than A1 winner Ryan Villopoto, who turned a 48.639 on his Monster Energy Kawasaki. However, both riders looked quick and tonight's outcome will likely boil down to who gets the better start.Trey Canard was a solid third after qualifying, turning a 49.148 on his factory Honda. The redheaded Okie looked particularly fast in the sand section. Meanwhile, Dodge Motorsports/Bel-Ray Hart & Huntington's Ivan Tedesco edged Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey for the fourth fastest time, logging a 49.707 to Dungey's 49.768.JGR Racing's Justin Brayton (49.869), GEICO Powersports Honda's Kevin Windham (49.989) and Red Bull Honda's Josh Grant (50.011) filled the sixth through eighth spots, while Yamaha's Tommy Hahn (50.022) and TwoTwo Motorsports' Chad Reed (50.028) were ninth and tenth, respectively. In the Lites division, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Josh Hanson topped the leader board with a 49.877.
