ANAHEIM, CA, JAN. 5 - It was a bit of a battle, but Yoshimura Suzuki's James Stewart set the bar for tonight's opening round of the 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Angel Stadium. A handful of riders had their number at the top of the leaderboard at one time or another, including Davi Millsaps, Ryan Villopoto and Stewart.

Millsaps stayed at the top for a while before getting knocked off by Villopoto, then Stewart ran it hard towards the end of the final A-group qualifying session and claimed the top spot with a 55.401 lap time, nipping Villopoto's 55.551.

In fact, qualifying was quite close in the A group, with five riders all placing in the 55-second bracket. Stewart and Villopoto lead the way, followed by Millsaps, Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and Justin Barcia.

A couple of spots back is Chad Reed.

In the final qualifying session for the 250 West A-group, GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac hammered out the quickest time, just edging out Ken Roczen, 56.705-56.767. Roczen held the top spot on the leaderboard for most of the session before getting bumped back by Tomac right at the end.
